Welcome

Welcome to EDST 20000 The History and Philosophy of Education. Professor Pratt and Professor Wiltfong will each be teaching a section of this course. We will be using this blog as a learning tool to respond to course content and material, to take polls and collect data, and to provide you with information concerning the course. The purpose of the blog is to extend the learning and discussions that occur in the classroom. As part of your course assignments you will be required to thoughfully respond to at least 10 post. Since this is a place where information is published please use correct grammar and spelling.

To get you started here is the first blog post for you to respond to: Introduce yourself, state whether you are in the Monday or Tuesday class, and share the HISTORY of your name. How did you get your name? Are you named after someone? Is there any special meaning to your name. This can include first, middle or last name...or any combination. How do you feel about your name? Do you have any nicknames, etc.?

My name is Debra Jean Hollingsworth Pratt and I am the professor for the Monday EDST 20000 class. My dad chose my name for me and I am named after my Aunt Jean. My mother wanted to name me Paula after my dad who name was Paul. My family always called me Debbie and I never liked that name because there were many other girls with the same name. I always wished I had a more unique name. Today most people call me Deb but I wish I would have had the nickname DJ.

My name is Tara Joanne Elizabeth Wiltfong. My first name was choosen by my mother. She loved the movie, "Gone with the Wind" and also watched "All My Children", a popular soap opera and both had a main character named, "Tara".

My middle name is the most special to me because it is also the middle name of my maternal grandma and my mother. If I ever have a daughter, there's no chance of her having a middle name other than Joanne.

Elizabeth is my confirmation name. It is the name that I picked myself when I was in 8th grade. My best friend's name was Elizabeth and my sister also had picked this name for her confirmation. I'm guess I'm not very original.

My name is Holli Marie Piers. I am in the Tuesday class with Professor Wiltfong. My name is the only name that my parents could agree on, there is not really any history. My name is spelled with an i instead of a y. The reason for that is because my sister's names end with i's. I really like that about my name because it is different, but I hate when people spell it wrong! The only nickname I really have is Holls, and my friend calls me that.

My name is Michelle Lynn Mullins Sickles. I am currently enrolled in both Professor Pratt's EDST 2000 on Mondays and am a Block I student.

I do not believe that Michelle was given to me for any other reason than my parents liked it and it was a very trendy name during the 1970's. My family always referred to my name while using the Beatles song "Michelle My Bell."

The nickname that my uncle gave to me and that I grew up with was Sha-la-da. I loved this and even at 34 it has sentimental meaning, I cannot hear the song "Brown Eyed Girl" by Van Morrison without smiling!

My name is Stephanie Nicole Compton. I am in Professor Pratt's EDST 200 class on Monday afternoon.
I got my name in a very interesting way , I was originally suposed to be named Sarah Jane , but my aunt was pregnant at the same time as my mom and they had told my parents that they were going to name their little girl Sarah also , my mom and dad did not want us to be confusedfor each other so they decided on the name Stephanie Nicole (Stephanie means crown and comes from the greek orgin) My family and friends ususally call me Steph, and this is what I generally like to be called. So this is hw I got my name.

My name is Lindsy Nicole Heller. I am currenty enrolled in the Tues. evening class with Professor Wiltfong. There is no special story behind how my parents came up with my name. They saw the name Lindsey in a newspaper one morning and decided to give me that name. My parents thought it would be unique to have it spelt without a "e" or "a". I think its funny, everytime I go to Starbucks its always spelt differently.. except ONCE they had spelt it correctly.
Today, friends call me linds or lizzie. Oh and no i'm not related to the Heller Ford company.. I get asked that a lot!

My name is Ashley Ranee Salyer. I am in the Tuesday night class with professor Wiltfong. After my oldest sister was born, my parents decided to give all their children the same initials. Ashley was the 'A' name they picked(older sister named Amber) and Ranee is the name of one of my moms friends. I picked my youngest sisters name (Alicia) after one of my friends. Nicknames I go by are Ash and "T" (my dad says it means trouble and it has stuck with me now for 20 years).

My name is Sarah Elizabeth Isabella Phillips Redmond. I am in the Monday class. There is no real history behind my name, except for the fact that when my mom was little, she always named her dolls Sarah Elizabeth because it was her favorite name. I like my name a lot. Sarah is Hebrew for princess, and Elizabeth means beauty. I chose Isabella for my confirmation name. It means dedicated to God. Phillips is my maiden name, and it means horse lover, which is fitting because my sisters and I have always loved horses. Redmond is my husband's last name. I think it is a good last name, easy to pronounce like Phillips. I never had any nicknames. When my sister was little, she could not say Sarah, so she called me Rahrey. Sometimes she still calls me that!

My Name is Kristin Marie Sanders. I'm in the Tuesday evening class with prof Wiltfong. I dont really have any special meaning to my name. My parents decided to name all of us starting with K's (Kellie, Kenny, Kristin, Kyle) I got my middle name Marie from my aunt. I kind of wished I had a more unique middle name becuase Marie is so common, but overall I like it. I dont have any nicknames, just Kristin.

Kelly Striker said...

My name is Kelly Lyn Shelton Striker. My name comes from my Grandfather. My brother has his first name and I was given his last name for my first name. Striker is my married name, given to me by my husband. Notice that my married name starts with the same letter as my maiden name. We married on September 15, 2007. Growing up I was always called Kell-Bell. It has stuck with me even into my adulthood, and sometimes, I catch my huband calling me it. He says that it is easy to call me that because he always hears my sister and nephew call me this name. I gues it is a name I have grew to love and recognize.

My name is Jordan Delks. My first name is biblically referred to the Jordan River. My name means to descend or flow down. My parents named me this because they were looking through names in the Bible that they liked and they came upon the name Jordan. Most people ask me if they named me after Michael Jordan but it was really after the river Jordan.

My name is Nicole Marie Kaufman. I am enrolled in the EDST 200 class on Mondays. I do not think that there is any real history to my name, other than my mom loving the name Nicole for a long time before I was born. When my mom was younger, she was set on having a girl and naming her Nicole. As nicknames go, my dad calls my Nic or Cole or Coley. And my mom calls me all kinds of nicknames.

My name is Abraham Daniel Combs. My mother named me that after the character in the Bible. She was going to name after a family member and have my first name as Daniel, but changed it at the last minute. Most people call me Abe, but it doesn't matter to me if it's Abe or Abraham.

My name is Kristina VanWaardenburg. I am in the Tuesday class with professor Wiltfong. My first name, Krisina, was just a name that my mom liked and my dad agreed with her, so that is what they named me. My middle name, however, Marie, is the name that all the girls in my family share. My great grandmother's name was Marie Rose and so all of her daughters, graddaughters and all of her greatgranddaughters, except for my one cousin, have Marie as their middle name. As far as nicknames goes, somtimes close friends call me Kris, but my whole family all calls me Boop. When I was a baby I used to purse my lips like Betty Boop, so my grandpa started calling me Boop. My parents and my older brother and most of my aunts and uncles still call me Boop.

My name is Britney Lynn Cisarik. I am currently enrolled in Professor Pratt's EDST 2000 class on Mondays. There is no history of my name. My mom wanted to name me Kelley but then my dad over ruled and named me Britney. When I was younger, im not going to lie, I thought my name was the coolest because I had the same name as Britney Spears. It was also spelled the same. I still like my name today. I think the name Britney was popular in my generation, since everytime a turn a corner I seem to run into a girl with the same name as me. That kind of gets annoying when there are multiple Britney's in one class. My friends usually call me Brit. It doesnt bother me if im called Britney or Brit. Therefore, this is what I think of my name!!

Alayna Linsemeyer said...

My name is Alayna Joann Linsemeyer, and I am in the EDST 20000 class on Monday from 1:00pm -3:50pm. The name Alayna was actually chosen by my sister because there was an actress on Sesame Street named Alaina (my parents wanted to change the spelling). How adorable, I know. My middle name is the same as my mom's and grandma's.

I like my name because I feel it's unique, and I rarely run into other Alaynas.

My name is Beth Keel. I am a student in the Monday class. My mother chose my name. I am not sure why i was named the way that I was but I think it is because my mother has two cousins; one named Loura Beth and the other is Debbie Renae. My name is Beth Renae. I think my name is kind of boring but I don't know very many Beths. I never had a nickname that stuck but I have one friend that calls me Bethany and a childhood friend's little sister could not say my name so she always called me Bethis but that is about it.

Susan Summar said...

My name is Susan Ruth Newman Summar. I am in the Tuesday evening class with Professor Wiltfong. My parents had a beagle named "Susie" and since they couldn't decide on a name for me, I got the name "Susan." Both of my parents had a sister named "Ruth" and that is where I got my middle name. "Newman" is my maiden name. When I was little, I would tell everyone that Paul Newman (the actor) was my uncle. I wish!! Summar is my married name. Most people spell and pronounce it wrong. My friends and family call me "Sue." My grandpa used to call me "Susie Q" and I wouldn't let anyone other than him call me that.

My name is Candice Silvas and I am in the Tuesday night class with professor Wiltfong. I’m not really a fan of my name, and I normally wouldn’t call attention to it, but there is a reason I have it so here goes…
My maiden name was Berg, and my mom was a huge fan of actress Candice Bergen, so guess who got to grow up Candice Berg? That would be me. I guess she thought that I would never get married. What’s worse is that my middle name is Lane, so I grew up with my family calling me “Candy Lane”. Haha. :-) The only people who call me Candy now are people who knew me before I was ten.

My name is Brian Keith Vedo. I am in the Monday Class with Prof. Pratt. I was named Brian because my grandfather on my mother's side never had a son, and if he had he would have named him Brian. So my mother named me Brian as the oldest grandson. And Keith is the name of my grandfather on my mother's side. I don't mind my name. It fits.

My name is Mara Bearss and I am in the Monday class with Professor Pratt. My parents chose my name from a childrens Bible. They picked a really unique name for me because I have never met another Mara. I have always loved my name and all the nicknames people came up with over the years. Such as marsy barsy, mars bars, and my niece calls me mar mar.

My name is Erik Lee Lampher. I am currently in Professor Wiltfongs class on tuesdays. My mother picked my name for me because my dad had a ridiculous name picked out for me, my mom wouldnt allow him to name me Thor. There is no history or reasoning for the name besides my mom liking it. She decided it should be with a "K" instead of a "C" she says to many people have it spelled that way and im unique so I have to have it spelled differnt.I recieved my middle name from my grandfathers on my mothers side his middle name was the same. I recieved my last name from my fathers side i don't really care for it to much but i gotta live with it. I dont have any nicknames my friends call me erik.

My name is Tera Louise Nelson. My grandma and grandpa wanted to name my mom either Wendy or Tera, and they chose Wendy. So then my mom wanted to name her daughter either Tera or Erica, and she chose Tera. The meaning of my name is "Earth." My mom and grandma both have Louise as their middle name, and if I ever have a daughter, her name will probably be Louise also.

My name is Candice Turnage. I am in the Monday class with professor Pratt. My mom was actually the person who named me.She loved Candice Bergen as an actress. She liked how her name was spelled with an "i" instead of an "a". As a nickname my family calls me Candi. It also is spelled different from most girls. I have always liked my name and has always been comfortable with it.

My name is Dana Jo Dalton and I am enrolled in the Monday class. My sister's name is Lana and she was named after my aunt. My mom wanted to have our family names kind of fit together, so because her name was Danette (Dani for short) I got the "D" from her name and the "ana" from my sister's name and I became Dana.

My middle name is not so sweet. I was actually named after my great-uncle Joey. I really do not like my middle name but people are always telling me how cute it is.

I do not have many nicknames that my friends call me, but my family has more than I could probably type. The main one from my mom and dad is Dane (the extra "uh" was just too much some times.

Hi, my name is Julianne Furois and I am in the Monday EDST class. I feel like I got jipped in the whole name game because i dont have a middle name! My mom fell in love my first name, Julianne, with inspiration from the actress Julianne Moore. I have gone by Julie since middle school, although my oldest friends still refer to me as Julianne, and probably always will. I have several nicknames including J and Jules. I always wanted a unique name and I suppose Julianne is good enough!

Casey Bryan said...

My name is Casey Ann Bryan and I am in the Tuesday class with Professory Wiltfong. My name doesn't actually have any meaning, it was just the only name that my parents could agree on, although I do have a couple weird names in my family. My brother and father are both named after my grandpa, Kenneth, but my brother goes by Jake and my father goes by Josh. To this day, nobody knows how these names came about because they both have nothing to do with their actual names. A lot of the time, people will pronounce my name as Cassie and I hate it! Some of my friends call me "B" but besides that, I don't really have any other nicknames.

My full name is Andrew James St. Germain and I am in the Tuesday class with Professor Wiltfong. There was no reason for my parents choosing my first name to be Andrew, but my middle name, James, is my moms father, or my grandpas, first name. I am unaware of any historical meanings to my last name St. Germain, all I know of my last name is that it is French Canadian.

Amy Kanyer said...

My name is Amy Ann Kanyer. My parents decided to not be told the sex of their baby when my mom was pregnant with me. Amy was at the top of their list of names if they had a girl. My sister and I were both given the middle name Ann. My parents did this so that if and when my sister and I get married and our last name is changed, we will still have something in common with our names. I appreciate them taking our futures into consideration when choosing our names. Family and friends tend to shorten my already short name to Aim. Of course I have other nicknames within my family that will follow me forever, but that I wish to not post on this blog. Those nicknames make me smile and will always link me to my family.

My name is Sean Patrick Cunningham. I'm in the monday class. I gave my middle name because it's the only one with any story to it. My grandpa wanted to name me Patrick but my parents liked Sean better but they said they would make Patrick my middle name. Because of that my name sounds very Irish. In high school people called me Koko, like the monkey, but the more i think about it I don't really know why they called me that.

My name is Samantha Jo Kenealy. I'm in the Monday EDST 20000 class. My name was chosen because my mom loved the show Bewitched. Yes, she named me after a witch.

My name is Lisa Anne Herrera. I was named after my moms best friend Lisa. My mom originally wanted to name me Jamie, because thats my dads name and she thought it would be a cute girls name, but my dad refused, so Lisa it is. I got my middle name after my mom's middle name Anne. I love my name and I wouldn't change it for the world. I think it suits me and I look like a LISA!
